Dental Fillings
What are Dental Fillings?
Fillings are restorations that are normally used to replace decay in one or more teeth. If you have a cavity, the decay has to be removed, and the small hole that is left behind is filled with a special dental material. Composite fillings are tooth-colored so that they blend in well with the rest of your smile. These fillings can last for many years without showing any signs of wear.
Why are Dental Fillings needed?
The reason dental fillings may be needed is because you have one or more cavities. Tooth decay can occur among patients of all ages, regardless of oral health and hygiene. Some patients are simply more prone to developing tooth decay, though it can be prevented and minimized by careful brushing and flossing at home. In the event that you have a cavity, the decay needs to be removed from the tooth before it gets worse.
Who is a candidate for Dental Fillings?
A normal dental exam can help us to identify teeth within the mouth that are decayed. In some cases, we will need to take x-rays to help in further identifying cavities that need to be filled. It is recommended that if you have a cavity, you come in for a filling as soon as possible. If the cavity is left untreated, the decay may get to the point of the tooth needing a complete root canal.
What happens during the procedure for a Dental Filling?
We first numb the area with a local anesthetic so that the procedure is comfortable for you. The decay is removed using a slow speed drill until all of it is out of the affected tooth. The composite resin is then placed into the tiny hole left behind and smoothed into place. Composite fillings are cured and hardened with a bright light. Once in place, the filling can last for many years without needing replacement. We can place multiple fillings at the same appointment if they’re within the same area of the mouth.
